The psychology of "Happiness"
Each of us wants to be happy & feel elated, every moment of our life. However, only a handful of us would spend time figuring out the true meaning of happiness & the science behind it.
Today, I will break down happiness into small consumable parts that will enable you to understand & experience happiness in a better way.
What is happiness?
By the books, happiness is an emotional state characterized by feelings of joy, satisfaction, contentment, well-being, etc.
However, I like to define happiness in a slightly different way that is broader.
Happiness to me is a state of mind when you are peaceful from within. This could be a state wherein you feel satisfied, content, and joy, or it could be where you are working on your passion or hobbies.
If you do not feel the rush of life, do not have a war going on within, are relaxed & free from all forms of negativity, you are in a state of true happiness.
Psychology of happiness
We have all heard the phrase that "True happiness lies in the present moment" And, it makes complete sense. Yet, we find it very tough to understand two significant questions:
What does the present moment mean?
How can one stay in the present moment?
What does "present moment" mean?
The present moment is a state wherein your mind is free from cluttered thoughts about the past or future. In such a state of mind, positive vibrations are running all over your body, enabling you to feel happy.
Let me demonstrate this to you using two elementary examples:
If you are a music lover, you will relate to this example. Think about the time you were listening to your favorite song in the perfect surrounding & were truly enjoying (vibing with) it. Truly enjoying means you weren't thinking about anything other than the song & its lyrics. At this very moment, you were in the "present moment."
If you find it tough to relate to the above example, click on this one. Think about the time you received some excellent news when you least expected it or did not have high hopes (a surprise from your loved one, landing up your dream job, etc.). At that moment, you were relaxed, without any thoughts in your mind. At this very moment, you were in the "present moment."
How to always be in the "present moment"?
It is not possible to always be in the present moment by human design. Nonetheless, you can train yourself to spend more time in the "present moment."
The best way to train yourself is to consciously reduce the amount of time you spend thinking about the past or future & use the time to perform some form of action (passion, hobby, etc.).
When we are engaged in some form of action, we are always in the "present moment" since our entire focus is on the move and not on unnessacary thoughts that could clutter our mind.
