If you believe that suffering from a mental health issue is cool, I request you to read this article
Conversations around mental health are being normalized, with everyone talking about it. It is lovely to see people understanding the importance of mental health, and voicing out.
Indeed, this is a great thing for India, moving forward. However, it is important to pause, & ponder upon if we are actually headed in the right direction.
Being aware of the concept of mental health, & prioritizing it, is crucial. But, unnecessarily obsessing over it, is dangerous.
Personally, I have seen quite a few individuals proclaiming that they are suffering from a serious mental health issue, when they aren't, & feeling cool about it.
Such individuals that believe that suffering from a mental health issue is a trend & is cool, are self-sabotaging their mental health.
Let's dive deep into why & how, telling yourself that you are suffering from a mental health issue when you aren't, is dangerous for you.
You must be aware of the power of your subconscious mind, & how it controls your feelings, & behavior. If you are, carry on reading. Else, I'd recommend you to read the linked article before moving ahead.
To understand the scenario better, let us take the example of an imaginary person, Rahul.
"Rahul is a college student, who gets sad pretty frequently. He also thinks that it is cool to have a mental health issue in today's time. Hence, he goes around telling his friends that he suffers from depression when in reality, he is just sad. He does this just for fun, & to act cool."
At first, this might not seem too dangerous. But, it is.
In Rahul's scenario, subconsciously, he is telling his mind that he is suffering from depression. If he keeps telling this on a prolonged basis, the mind will start producing certain chemicals, which in turn, can trigger depression.
What you say to yourself, is how your body reacts. Therefore, be very vary of what you say to yourself.
P.s. In no way, am I trying to convey that people proclaiming that they suffer from an issue, actually don’t. I only wish to convey that no one should proclaim suffering from an issue, just to sound cool.
